Sean Astin runs 2013 LA Marathon

Sean ran his 4th LA Marathon on March 17, 2013, finishing with a time of 4:42:31.  Here are many photos from the day.

Inspiring Stories at LA Marathon

Hollywood actor and long distance runner Sean Astin, who is famous for his epic roles in “The Goonies” and “Lord of the Rings,” ran the LA Marathon in support of the Achilles Freedom Team (and other charities) and even wore a hat supporting his base organization #Run3rd. 

“There is a sense of achievement and community as well as the sexiness when competing in the LA Marathon,” said Astin the day before the race. “Nobody was handing out water in Mordor. 

Heading in to the race, Astin said he was wishing for “a little heat blast from around First street and Grand right near Disney Hall,” even though he admitted to enjoying running in the “cool weather.” 

The 41-year-old Astin completed the LA Marathon with a time of 4:26:31 and was 593 in his age division successfully beating his 2010 time of 5:16:02. 

Astin competed in two prior LA Marathons, and even limped out his last race “fighting with every heart, nerve, and sinew” to break four hours after injuring his calf muscle training in the week prior to the LA Marathon in 2010.

It’s just a hash tag like the millions of others, but I am infusing it with sustained passion and intention. The longer it goes on, the more I reflect about why it is able to grow. Sean's bib number is 8296. Race start time is approximately 7:24am PT (10:24am ET).

Sign up for race day tracking to have messages sent to you via Twitter, Facebook, email or text as your favorite runner crosses certain checkpoints along the course.

Sean will do a pre-race interview with AM 570 Radio. The station/website provide full live streaming coverage of the race, weather, traffic, etc., from 5am to 10am PT. Tweet your questions on race day to @LAMarathonINFO and they will answer on radio or via Twitter. "Veteran LA radio host Leo Quinones joins the radio broadcast team this year to handle interviews of celebrity Honda LA Marathoners including actor Sean Astin." Source

Sean Astin's passion for running

Readers of this blog will have noticed Sean's recent interest in running; over the last couple of months, he's run in the Calabasas Classic 10k, the Goodloe Byron 15k and the Santa to the Sea half marathon. But even his most devoted fans may not be aware how long and deeply held his passion is.

Sean graciously agreed to answer a few questions about running for us. What follows is minimally edited for clarity.

What prompted you to train for this year’s LA Marathon and what motivates you to keep running?

I love talking about running. I don’t think I’ve given any ‘running centric’ interviews before. So, to your questions. My answers are not linear; in fact, what follows is a spelling error laden [actually not -Ed.] stream of consciousness. Good luck sorting through it!

Sean plans marathon and half marathon

Sean already has running plans beyond the 2012 LA Marathon on March 18. He has signed up for the inaugural Hollywood Half Marathon on April 7. This 13.1 mile race will begin and end at Universal Studios and will pass such iconic locations as the Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood & Highland, Grauman's Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite celebrity. Wonder who Sean will go as… :-)

Marathon Man!

Sean has said he is in training for the LA Marathon on March 18, 2012. He ran the 2010 LA Marathon in 5:16:12, not bad for having pulled a calf muscle earlier in the week!

Note: He did not wear the shoes he posted a photo of the morning of the race!

Sean Astin at Disney D23 Expo

Sean attended the Disney D23 Expo in Anaheim on August 21, where he signed autographs for fans of all ages and gave several interviews. Sean voices Oso in Disney's hit program for preschoolers, Special Agent Oso.
